Thanks Gary
I will measure the back of the lens. Although I can't understand how the width affect the problem, since the lens seems to screw in the adapter in the full length its the screw thread?
And yes I was planning to do lots of birds watch!

Hi Anthony,

I would take a digital caliper and measure the rear of the lens. You'll see the picture of the Angenieux with the 40.5mm measurement. To be safe you would have to have a measurement of 36-37mm. If not, you would have to machine the lens yourself or send it to RJ. 100mm is a bit of a long lens for micro 4/3. Unless you are doing a lot of bird watching then it may not be worth it to machine that particular lens.

Good Luck!

Gary

Hi Gary
I have just bought a 100mm Nikkor-cine lens F2.8, and it seems not to focus on infinity.
Do you think it is a similar issue as the one you had with the Angenieux lens?
Should I send it to RJ?

Thank you

The indiGO-JIB is definitely worth it. For $399 for a light weight jib that I believe now also comes with it's own case is a great deal. Tim continues to make improvements on the unit. In fact if he makes any changes to his gear Tim is usually really good about helping you with the upgrade. You can give Tim a call to see what inexpensive sticks he used with the indiGO-JIB. You don't have to buy Miller or Gitzo sticks which are pretty costly. There are other options as well. Contact Tim Ovel at www.indisystem.com and he'll be able to give you a good reccomendation.

Thanks for the reply! That's awesome but however a bit too pricy. It costs twice the Canon 550D for example and tops many times the price of the Jib system. Are you sure it's worth it?

Hi Nikolay,

You don't have to use the Gitzo sticks. I use them because they are pretty light weight. I have an older model which is not available now but you would need to have a Series 3 so that you can add a 75mm bowl adapter and use a professional video head.

Here is one that is similar:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/567550-REG/Gitzo_GT3541LS_GT3541LS_Systematic_6X_Carbon.html

For height though I would go higher. The Miller DV 20 works well also. I have used the indiGO-JIB on this set of sticks and it does a good job and will get you the height you need.

Yes, it may have been for an 8mm film camera but it was still a good adventure to get this lens working. It's a touch soft with some vignetting but it's still a nice lens to play with and I like the look of it despite the flaws. Perhaps it will shine with the Pentax Q or Kenko that would be nice indeed.

Very interesting Ed. I have also found another way to modify the lens as well but at the end of the day in order to use this lens you need to stop down by a half to a full stop to get sharpness. Hopefully you've found a nice solution. Thanks for the note.

This appears to be an 8mm lens? Designed for 8mm film, I mean. Only the 16mm versions will be useful on Panasonics.

It may yet shine, on the Pentax Q or the Kenko?

Hi Denis,

The c-mount you want is from Hawk Peng. His user name on ebay has changed to the following:

http://myworld.ebay.com/hawks_factory/?_trksid=p4340.l2559

I've tested many c-mount adapters and with the Schneider Variogon lens the Hawk c-mount will give you infinity focus.

It is by far the best c-mount adapter I have used. No other c-mount will give you infinity focus that I've used including the RJ adapter which is also a great adapter but will not work well with this lens.

Have fun with this lens. It's a really nice sharp lens!

Best,

-G

Hi Gary, I have the same variogon lens that I'm getting cleaned presently and would like to hook it up to my GH2. Can you recommend a C mount adapter for the GH2? I was wondering what type / brand you use?
Many thanks

Hi fegato,

Yes, I must update this page. I'm surprised people are still trying to get this lens to work.

The c-mount you want is from Hawk Peng. His user name on ebay has changed to the following:

http://myworld.ebay.com/hawks_factory/?_trksid=p4340.l2559

You must use Hawk Peng's c-mount that will get you closer to infinity focus than the other c-mount adapters and is one of the best.

I will post an update on this lens in terms of getting it to infinity focus. Sometimes the tape fix may not be enough.

hi gary.
i just bought the same exact lens you show in the photo (<span>Fujinon H6x12.5R)</span> I'm tryin' to adapt it to my GH2 but i think my cmount to m43 is too thick and do not fit well because i can't easily achieve infinite focus (i'm tring to find a very slim adapter).
what kind of adapter do you used?
thanks!

Hey Bumper,
Thanks for checking out the site. In terms of the shoulder pad it can slide to the position you need and then you can lock it in place. My shoulder mount sits on a 12" rail and the mount can be adjusted so that you can have a longer or shorter distance between the Bulldog and the shoulder pad. When you are reffering to the arm component I'm assuming you are talking about the shoulder mount but if you are reffering to the indiSYSTEM BallGrip I sometimes like to modify my Bulldog so that instead of using the shoulder pad I'll use the BallGrip as a stabilizer against my shoulder or body or sometimes even under my armpit. LOL. It's a simple device and with it weighing so little I find it even more useful than a shoulder mount when you need a Bulldog mini. If you are used to using a shouldermount ENG style of shooting I think the Bulldog works well in the shouldermount configuration for a beefier setup like a GH2 with B4 lens, mattebox, and follow focus. That's where the shoulder mount has worked well for me. Hope that helps to answer your question.

Warm regards,

Gary

Hey Gary, thanks for the review and great pics. I'm in the research stage of finding a rig for myself and the Bulldog is a contender. What is your take on the shoulder pad/arm component? Being non-adjustable I'm concerned that shoulder usage could be awkward.

Thanks Chris for your post. I will look into this and ask R.J. the ebay seller jinfinance to see if he can create a custom mount from the secondary M42 type thread. It definitely is not M42 and it is not a T-mount. Like I said I bought a brand new Fujinon H6x12.5R and it is different from the old ones that I sold. The thread mount for the secondary mount is a little bit wider and so it does not give infinity focus with my blue tape fix. I'd first try to see if you can try the Blue tape fix and see if you can get infinity focus with the lens you have.

I've purchased many different Fujinon c-mount zoom lenses and it's very random. Some lenses totally clear and look to work with a c-mount to m4/3 adapter and they won't work to give you infinity focus. This is true for the Fujinon H6x12.5D. It won't work right though it fits to c-mount to m4/3 adapter perfectly. You can modify it by removing the screw underneath the rubber ring of the focal ring so that you go beyond infinity focus but your scales are off and the lens focal ring can rotate out of the barrel. This is currently how I would do it.

I'm still on a hunt for the older Fujinon H6x12.5R. If I only knew the GH2 was just around the corner. Oh, well.

Let me know how the Fujinon C6x17.5B works out for you. And I do not know what the B means either. If you do find out let us know.

Thanks!

Whoops my lens is actually C6x175B not C16X175B as I wrote above.
I guess C means 'c-mount' , 6X -zoom factor and 175 code for the widest angle, not sure what the 'B' at the end means...

Hello Gary. Thanks for posting your lens adventures and findings.
I've just acquired a different c-mount Fujinon TV Zoom. This one is quite old, it's model C16x175B 17.5mm-105mm & f1.8 . It used to be fitted to a 'line test' camera at the animation studio I work at.
I notice that like your lens described above, the c-mount on the rear of the lens can be unscrewed and exposes another larger diameter threaded lens mount. I wonder what format this is? I saw one ebay seller for a similar lens state that this was M42 (old Pentax, Prakitika, Zenit etc.), butI've got an M42 adaptor and that's slightly larger and not the same as this thread. I found another reference that suggested this thread might be special to some older Sony TV cameras???
Anyway, it strikes me, that by removing the cmount and somehow coupling to this unknown (and larger) lens mount, then maybe these lenses could give a larger image circle after all. I'm hoping to buy a GH2 soon and would really like to put this old lens to good use...
many thanks
Chris

<p>I've sold these lenses and have been trying to find another one to purchase and test on the GH2.</p>
<p>Just as an FYI the older version H6x12.5R with the blue tape fix allowed you to achieve infinity focus. The newer version of the <strong style="font-style: normal; font-weight: bold; ">H6x12.5R does not work. :(</strong></p>

That sounds great. It will be a little bit of a wait but I'm sure it will be worth it. Please let me know what you think of the mount when you do get it. Thanks!

I just bought one of the ciecio7 b4 mounts it actually was about same price as what Bumkicho was asking so i just am going to mount directly to gh1 and skip the other adaptors. I have a canon b4 lens with 2x that i plan on using with it. I am now thinking about how to get zoom servo power ?

Yes, they are a little pricey but ciecio7 is very well known for his solid adapters. I can't speak personally for having used them but others love his Canon FD adapter and he has done a PL to m4/3 adapter as well. If you do decide to get one please let me know. Would love to hear what you think. Ideally though if you can ask DVXUser member Bumkicho to see if he can get another order out that would be deal. I think it would be cheaper and I believe someone is using a Canon FD 2X extender with the Bumki B4 mount and seems to be getting some very nice results. Good Luck! I definitely think its a promising venture with the upcoming GH2 and great with the hacked GH1.

Hi Dave,

Absolutely the B4 lenses with the Bumki B4 Mount to Canon FD allow the ability to use ENG style lenses on m4/3. The 2x extender although giving you a couple stops of light loss is built into the Canon B4 lenses and allow you to bypass the optical zoom on the camera which gives you very good results. Good lighting is still key. You can check out the thread by DVXUser Bumkicho. Thanks to the B4 mount he had made folks have been very successful using these lenses.

<p>Unfortunately I don't have the lenses anymore. I sold them. They were pretty decent in low light. Not mind blowing. I'd say you still have to stop down for sharpness so the lens is more like f/1.4.</p>

Hi Jeremy,

Canon cameras have larger sensors than the m4/3 system so they will generally not work with c-mount lenses. The Micro Four Thirds system uses the sensor size (18 x 13.5 mm) which is small enough for c-mount lenses to work fairly well 25mm and above. You can check out more info and samples at getdpi.com.

I came across your post searching about the c-mount and using it on a canon.

I realize that your camera is not a canon, but have you come across anyone that has?

Hi Pat, Yes, I agree there is some loss in contrast with the 2x digital engaged but overall I am still surprised that this lens can give some pretty sharp images. I'll post some comparisons shortly. :)

Thank you Gary! Very useful to see the results before slogging away on eBay to find the perfect lens! The loss of contrast on 2x digital is an eyeopener too! Good stuff and please keep it up!

Thanks for checking out the blog Harley!

Yes, the Angenieux Zoom Type L2 is a wonderful lens probably one of the sharpest cine zooms I've used on the GH1. Right now I've seen them on ebay for about $500.

In fact here's one on ebay from vintage_bolex_movie_cameras and it looks like the price has dropped a little. I'd go for it. I've picked up a few lenses from Andre and he's quite reputable and has great customer service.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=380159073810&ssPageName=ADME:X:RTQ:US:1123

I'm hoping to get my Ang zooms back in the next couple weeks and will be doing a few more tests with the GH1.

I've been a little dormant on the blog because of work but will be posting back up this week.

Cheers!

Hi Gary,
I'm looking for the L2 zoom version which had its own intergral side viewfinder tube, which I once used back in the 1960's on a non-reflex Bell & Howell 70DA 16mm camera.
I want one to use with my French GIC 9,5mm cine camera (which has a c mount but is a non-reflex camera)!
I enjoyed reading your blog - its made me interested in getting a GH1 - but only when the prices drop a bit here in the UK.
